10 Things Your Massage Therapist Wants You to Know

If you’ve never had a massage before – or even if you have! – sometimes it can be awkward or nerve-racking. “Do I take off all my clothes?” “Should I talk?” “What if it hurts me?” “Do I call you a ‘masseuse’ or a ‘massage therapist’?” (The answer is ‘massage therapist.’)

These are common questions, and although it’s perfectly all right to feel a little awkward at your massage, we want you to feel as relaxed about the whole thing as possible!

Without further adieu, here are the top 10 things your massage therapist wants you to know as compiled by our team of Licensed Massage Therapists.

Rule #1: Enjoy Your Massage!

1. Don’t be shy—communication is key. Let your massage therapist know about about any recent injuries, illnesses, areas of tension or tenderness. Discussing these before the massage is key to making sure you have a great experience. (Don’t keep secrets from your massage therapist! Our ears are open.)

2. Don’t worry about hurting our feelings. If there is too much pressure happening (or not enough!) or you want to focus on a certain area more than another, just let us know. This appointment is for you, so don’t be afraid to speak up!

3. You can keep your underwear on if that’s what you’re comfortable with. Don’t worry about us seeing anything – we are trained in how to properly keep your body covered even while moving the sheets around, so there is nothing to be embarrassed about. (Guys, generally men’s massage etiquette would include that you keep your undergarments on.)

4. You are not obligated to talk during your massage. You may do whatever you like. Massage therapists generally are very receptive to your needs and will be able to tell if you are falling asleep or not feeling talkative.

5. Falling asleep is a compliment! Drooling is also a compliment. It means we’ve done our job of helping you relax. Snooze away!

6. Ladies, your unshaven legs are nothing to stress out about. We don’t care. It’s kind of like a little exfoliation for our hands!

7. The toots—it happens. Passing gas can be a sign of full body relaxation and possibly even detox. This means we’re doing our job right, and don’t sweat it. We’ve seen (and heard) it all! Don’t be embarrassed.

8. Tipping is a much-appreciated gesture of thanks for a well done massage. Feel free to read all about spa tipping etiquette if that makes you feel more comfortable, or just tip what you feel like matches the service you received. A gift of 15-20% is customary, but it’s completely up to you.

9. Turning your cell phone off is not only a good idea—it’s a great one. Help us create an amazing, relaxing atmosphere for you without the distraction of cell phone beeping or buzzing.

10. Try to arrive on time or a few minutes early if you can! We are generally scheduled back to back and want to give you the full 55 minutes you’ve paid for.

Most importantly, do everything you need to before and during your massage to fully enjoy the 55 minutes of “you” time. We are committed to listening and adjusting our techniques to ensure you get an amazing, effective and relaxing massage.

Love,
